OnStar Feature List GrowingStory by Jeff Feldsher - October 9,2007 In addition to unlocking doors and vehicle tracking, OnStar has some new improvements headed our way. Starting in 2009 about 20 GM models are scheduled to receive an upgrade which can actively take control of a vehicle by restricting acceleration while allowing the brakes and steering to function, bringing it to a slow controlled stop. When a vehicle is reported stolen, the integrated GPS system will pinpoint its location for authorities, now if the car also happens to be in motion, a signal can be sent that totally cuts engine power. An announcement broadcast through the speakers may also warn of an imminent police takedown. Considering the amount of injuries recorded every year due to police car chases, this would serve as an invaluable tool. GM is willing to provide the technology to other manufactures for this reason. In addition Onstar is currently developing a very useful feature that will not allow vehicles to start if reported stolen.
